Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Enforcement Campaign (December 2017- May 2018)

The Surfside Police Department is participating in the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) High Visibility Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Enforcement Campaign from December 2017 through the end of May 2018. The focus of this campaign is to increase awareness and provide education to the motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians using our roadways.

Officers are operating along Harding Avenue 88 Street to 96 Street, and Collins Avenue 88 Street to 96 Street.  These corridors were identified as high traffic, high pedestrian areas.  Officers are employing several methods of enforcement in order to identify risky behaviors with regard to pedestrian and bicycle travel.  The first phase consisted of operations along the corridors geared toward awareness, providing educational materials and the issuance of warnings.  We are now moving into the second phase, officers will begin issuing citations to drivers, pedestrians and motorist when appropriate.
 
Though there are many behaviors associated with bicycle/pedestrian violations, crashes and fatalities, the most common areas of concern are:

  • Speeding
  • Failure to stop for red lights or stop signs
  • Right turns on red in the business district
  • Failure to yield to pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Distracted driving
  • Blocking crosswalks

Creating a safe and efficient walking and bicycling environment has long been an established goal and integral part of the Surfside Police Department. By enhancing pedestrian and bicycle safety we hope to ensure that Surfside will continue to be the best place to live, work and play in Florida for our residents and visitors.
