The Citizens Police Academy is an excellent opportunity for residents and business owners to get a "behind the scene" look into the Surfside Police Department. The Academy enables participants to become more familiar with the day-to-day operations of the Police Department.
Participants gain a better understanding of the policies and procedures, responsibilities, demands of personnel and the laws that guide decision making. They become better informed as to the many responsibilities role of the police. For ten weeks, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., one night a week, participants receive "hands on" instruction, guest lecturers, classroom activities, K-9 and marine patrol demonstrations, actual participation at the firearm and driving ranges, and the opportunity for "ride-alongs" with patrol officers.
Citizen Academy classes are held at the police municipal building twice a year. Atthe end of the 10 week academy, an awards banquet is held. Class space is limited to 20 per Academy session. This course is free of charge and available to the citizens of the Town of Surfside.
