The Criminal Investigations Unit is responsible for conducting criminal investigations and is staffed by detectives who investigate all crimes that occur in Surfside. The primary function of CIU is to conduct follow-up investigations of reported crimes. These investigations consist of interviewing suspects, victims, and witnesses; analyzing information for validity, reliability, and accuracy; and compiling a comprehensive and factual case file to be presented in court.

Detectives receive training in criminal investigations, interview and interrogation, crime scene investigation, and courtroom testimony. We also have a detective assigned to the South Florida Money Laundering Task Force who investigates narcotics trafficking and money laundering.
