Bicycle Patrol

Officers assigned to bicycle patrol have increased opportunity for interaction with the community. The bicycle patrol officers are highly visible, have greater mobility and are easily accessible by citizens. Citizen reaction to the bicycle patrol program has been extremely favorable. The bicycle officer establishes more personalized contact with the community members and is not isolated in a police vehicle. The bicycle patrol helps to continue a community-oriented style of policing.

Beach Patrol

The beach patrol is responsible for the beachfront areas of the Town of Surfside. Beach patrol officers drive 4-wheel drive patrol vehicles that enable them to perform their duties on the soft sand. In addition, they patrol on 4-wheel ATVs during times of high tide and when the beach is congested with swimmers and sunbathers.

Motor Squad

The motor unit consists of 3 motorcycle officers using Road King Harley Davidson motorcycles, state-of-the-art laser and radar hand-held units to enforce speed laws. They respond quickly to traffic situations and concentrate on enforcing the traffic laws.
All motor officers that have been assigned to the Motorcycle Squad progress through several important training courses. Motor officers must successfully complete an advanced, intensive motorcycle riding course. Officers assigned to Motor Squad are also trained as investigators of motor vehicle crashes.

Honor Guard

The Surfside Police Honor Guard has been established to represent the Surfside Police Department, its officers and families at police funerals, parades and other ceremonial occasions. It is our intention to assist all officers and their families during their time of emotional duress from the loss or debilitating injury of their loved one.

K-9 Team

Currently the Surfside Police Department has one full service handler and canine team. They are trained to find people, evidence and narcotics. The handler takes the dog home and the dog becomes a part of the family. This is not only convenient for the police department, but insures the dog is capable of being around people other than his handler. The patrol car used by the K-9 team is a standard police car modified for transporting our dog. Most noticeably, they have a platform in the rear seat specifically designed for the dog, and electric doors that may be opened remotely by the handlers. The handler often has to leave his dog in the car while attending to other business and leave the car running with the air conditioner on. Some of the special features you may not notice include windows that automatically open when the temperature in the interior of the car gets too high. The car will also activate the lights and siren and send a signal to the K-9 officer's pager warning him of the problem.
