Keeping Surfside Clean and Attractive

The Town of Surfside places a high priority on keeping the community clean and attractive. In fact, Surfside's sanitation services have been lauded as among the best in America.

Garbage and Trash Collection:

Garbage (such as kitchen refuse) is collected from your side-yard by the Town, on a daily basis, except Sunday. Service is provided on all holidays, except Christmas. Special schedules may be implemented in the event of a hurricane or other natural disasters.

Trash (such as yard clippings or corrugated cardboard boxes too large to fit in the recycle bin, etc.) is collected 5 days a week (Tuesday through Saturday) from curbside. Please do not place trash at curbside after 7:00 A.M. on Saturday until before 7:00 A.M. on Tuesday, to avoid unsightly property and street appearances over the weekend.

• If you have your property maintained by a gardener or lawn service, they are required to haul away any clippings or debris.
• If you maintain your property, the debris or yard clippings should be bagged or bundled, and should not exceed 50 lbs. per bundle or bag; items bundled should not exceed 4 feet in length.

Recycling: Occurs Every Wednesday. The Town is proud to recycle well over 500 tons of material a year and that number is increasing each year.

Please use the two plastic bins that came with your home. If you do not have the bins, please call Town Hall (305) 861-4863 to have them delivered to your residence.

In The GREEN Bin, Put:

  • Newspaper and colored inserts
  • Flattened corrugated cardboard (it must fit inside the bin)
  • On your first recycling day of the month, place household batteries in a clear, zip-top plastic bag
  • From October through December, place old phonebooks.

In The BLUE Bin, Put:

  • Aluminum and steel food and beverage cans
  • Clear, brown and green glass food and beverage containers
  • Household plastic containers with the 1, 2, or 3 recycling number on the bottom; no microwave containers
  • Drink boxes, milk and juice cartons

Use brown paper bags for your excess recyclables. Just place them alongside your recycling bins.

Bins should be out at the curb by 7 a.m. on your weekly recycling day. Place your blue recycling bin on top of your green bin to protect your newspapers and corrugated cardboard on rainy or windy days.

Water & Sewer
Water and sewer bills are sent out every 2 months. Payment is due within 30 days. The Town offers a 5% discount on your water for customers who pay their bills within 10 days of the billing date.

Common Areas

All of the Town's streets are swept regularly, and continuous attention is paid to all public areas including parks, playgrounds, sidewalks, recreation areas, public facilities, drainage systems, and underground utilities.

Beaches

The Town promotes clean, safe and attractive public beaches. Environmental, recreational and public health priorities are essential to the Town's management of all public areas. The State, County and Town are cooperating on the removal of non-native, intrusive plants from the beach, improving cross-over paths to the shore, enhancing views and protection of the beaches’ natural state, and planning improvements to the walking path.
The Town continues to prevent any commercial activities or businesses from operating on the beach. The sand is cleaned and maintained by Miami-Dade County, and the beach areas are monitored and patrolled by Surfside. Our beaches are amongst the most beautiful and tranquil beaches in the world. Our public beaches are used by residents and visitors every day of the year.

Composting

The Town of Surfside encourages composting.
Yard trash (landscape waste and grass clippings) comprises approximately 25% of our residential waste stream.

What is compost?
Composting is the material derived from the aerobic decomposition of organic material such as leaves and grass. The resulting compost is a nutrient-rich soil enhancer that can improve soil quality.

Why should I compost at home?
Composting at home is a great example of environmental stewardship. It can help reduce your waste stream while producing a valuable soil amendment that can be used with house plants and gardens.

How do I make compost?
Making compost can be as simple as mixing leaves (carbon-rich materials and freshly cut grass (nitrogen-rich materials) into a pile. Often a compost bin is used to enhance the compost process.
