Work off all your bottled up energy with a variety of classes courtesy of the Surfside Parks and Recreation Department. The team is offering a regular rotation of fitness workouts, youth sports, story times, sing-along and more through ZOOM, a web-based video platform that can be easily accessed through your computer, tablet or smartphone.

"Learn About Therapy Dogs"

Provided by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue

Join the Parks and Recreation Department along with the assistance of the Surfside Police Department as we introduce the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Response K9 Team.

The Response K9 program was started three years ago and involves greyhounds along with other adopted dogs. These dogs help first responders deal with occupational stress, and victims in crisis situations. The team will also explain the purpose and benefits of therapy and service dogs to not only first responders but everyday civilians like yourself.

The team will showcase live rescue dogs during this virtual events

"Surfside Pumpkin Carving Contest"

The Parks and Recreation Department invites all Surfside residents to participate in our very first pumpkin carving contest. Design and carve your own pumpkin using carving kits or other house hold items.

Pumpkins will be free of charge and limited to one per household.

Submit your proof of residency to precreation@townofsurfsidefl.gov by 11:59 P.M on October 11, 2020.

Proof of residency must include first and last name, phone number and address.

Do you want your kids to learn how to manage stress, stand up to peer pressure, develop creativity, emotional resilience and feel empowered? CIJ Insight for Life for Kids and Teens is a powerful course created to help them discover their unique talents, learn valuable tools and techniques that prepare them for success at school and in life.

Toning with Weights

Join us for a virtual toning class, get a total body workout, with a focus on muscle conditioning.

What Can I Use Instead of Dumbbells?

Yoga

Join us for virtual Yoga. In this class the basic, foundational yoga postures are practiced to align, strengthen and promote flexibility in the body. Breathing techniques and meditation are also integrated.

-       Monday - 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm
    
-       Saturday - 9:00 am - 10:00 am

-       Age Group: Adult and Seniors

-     Equipment: yoga blocks and straps. A tie or rope can be used if you do not have a yoga strap. A book can be used if you do not have a yoga block.


Morning Stretch

Morning stretches are the best way to start the day. Kick of your day the healthy way with a virtual morning stretch class.

-       Tuesday and Thursday

-       9:00 am to 10:00 am

-       Age Group: Adults and Seniors


Adult Salsa Casino/Rueda

Salsa Casino/Rueda is a form of Cuban style salsa. Pairs of dancers form a circle (Rueda in Spanish), with dance moves called out by one person (the caller). 
This class is applicable from the young to the young at heart. This is a dance that may be implemented into a "one on one" free style which is popular for social dancing in salsa clubs. 

We will be focusing on footwork which will lead into partner work. 
**For all you quarantining alone shadow partnering is an option

The only requirement to join this class is the desire to dance and have fun. 

All skill levels are welcomed and Advanced classes will be formed as students progress through the levels.

Zumba

Join us for a virtual Zumba class, get a total body workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility.

-       10:00 am to 11:00 am

-       Age Group: Adults and Seniors

Aerobics/Body Sculpting Class

This class consists of various types of cardio aerobics including Low Impact and step aerobics that is easy to follow to enhance your cardio workout. This will be followed by a segment of strength training, abdominal workout, and cool down.

-       Wednesday 

-       6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

-       Age Group: Adult and Seniors

-       Equipment: If you do not have a step you can do the same movements on the floor without a step. Two cans of soup can be used if you do not have weights, a broom or mop can be used if you do not have a body bar.

 

Trivia Games

Join us for virtual Trivia Games! Let’s have fun and see how smart you are in subjects anywhere from Geography, History, Entertainment and General Subjects.

Cardio and Strength

This fitness class combines a variety of exercises to help increase cardio endurance while strengthening muscles. The class will begin with a warm-up and offer modifications for every level and end with a cool down.

-       8:30 am to 9:30 am

-       Age Group: Active Adults 

-       Equipment: Chair, weights and elastic training bands


Pilates

Through a series of exercises using resistance bands, balls, and rings, this workout helps build, sculpt, and tone muscles, giving your body a long, lean look. Pilates aids in flexibility and improving posture, as stretching your body is a vital part of class.

-       6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

-       Age Group: Adult and Seniors

-       Equipment: a tie or rope can be used if you do not have a resistance band or ring. 
        A can of soup or vegetables can be used if you do not have a ball. 



YOUTH CLASSES

Gymnastics

Always wanted to try out gymnastics? Now is the time! Experience gymnastics doing a majority of stretching, cardio, dance, beam and some basic tumbling skills.

-       Age Group: 6 – 12

-       Materials if needed: Panel or Yoga mat and Towel or Blanket


Dry Land Swim Work Out 

Hold onto your fitness and increase your swimming strength with a virtual dry land swim workout.

-       Monday and Wednesday

-       5:00 pm to 6:00 pm

-       Age Group: Kids Ages 6 – 14


Creative Time                                                                                                                 

Join us for a variety of classes each week to keep the kids busy while stuck at home.

Theme: BEADS
Materials needed: Chopsticks or pencil (chopsticks preferred) glue stick, safety scissors, magazine or paper

Good Vibe Tribe for Tweens/Teens

The Good Vibe Tribe (a teen service adventures program) combines meaningful service with exciting adventures. We incorporate service-learning for teens as a form of education that involves personal reflection, practical skills, and social engagement to offer an opportunity for self-discovery, community connection that ensures a truly enriching experience. The meeting times will be focused on leadership and teambuilding activities as well as opportunities for participants to engage in community service projects.

-       4:30 pm - 5:30pm

-       Age group: 11 - 16


Snapology

The program consists of a series of fun, engaging and educational, hands-on STEM classes using LEGO building blocks.

Each class explores a favorite theme ( from superheroes, ninjas, Star Wars, Harry Potter) and invites children to 
1) build different characters and story scenes from their imagination
2) present / share their creations with the rest of the group

Students build and explore the world of Pokémon by creating their own gyms, battles, and generation of Pokémon. They will also learn the science of habitats of Pokémon.

Kids Cooking Class

Join our virtual cooking class on Wednesdays to share a joyful moment with your children, while cooking something delicious in the kitchen. Parks and Recreation is inviting you to make an easy recipe to enjoy with the family.

Perfect for younger Zumba fans! Kids get the chance to be active and jam out to their favorite music doing kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba Choreography.

Quarantine Talk Time for Tweens and Teens (ages 10 & Up) 

Friday 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Coping with quarantine and pandemic issues can be scary and difficult for kids and teens. It’s normal to experience anxiety, loneliness, sadness, and  boredom during quarantine. They may feel unsure, hopeless or disappointed about summer plans and the school next year, feel separated from friends or concerned about family. 

This Surfside Support Zoom Group will give them an opportunity to connect with other kids to share thoughts and feelings, offer support, and learn skills to manage anxiety in this upbeat and open forum. Moderated by licensed Psychotherapist and Surfside resident Dr. Deborah Dawson, Ph.D.


Jazz Fusion

Join us for virtual Jazz Fusion! Combining Jazz dance technique with urban dance steps. Foot Attire: barefoot, sneakers, or jazz shoes

Hip Hop

Join us for Virtual Hip Hop. Dancers develop focus, strength, agility, rhythm, coordination, musicality and choreography with current music from today's hits. Students are challenged to think on their feet all while having fun.

Feeling restless or bored at home? It is for your safety amid growing coronavirus concerns. Lucky for residents, the Surfside Parks and Recreation Department has compiled a number of activities for kids, adults and seniors to fill their time. Check out the list below.
