Surfside’s Jewelry Shop Shines
Keith Gray has been in the estate jewelry business since 1980, when he started buying gold watches and jewelry and quickly acquired a valuable collection. As the collection grew, so did the business. After a time selling and trading at various antique, watch and jewelry shows, he launched Gray & Sons with a showroom in Miami Beach, later adding locations in Coconut Grove and Surfside. Today, the business is run exclusively from the shop in Surfside and features a vast online business.
The store, located on the corner of Harding Avenue and 96th Street, is a reflection of Keith’s 40 years of experience in the business. The shop is filled with beautifully lit cases of carefully curated sparkling jewelry and rare models of watches from the finest names: Patek Philippe, Rolex, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin and more.
Gray & Sons is truly distinguished by its service. “One of the things that makes Gray and Sons stand out – aside from our huge inventory of estate jewelry and fine luxury timepieces – is our workshop,” he says. “It is constantly busy repairing and remanufacturing fine timepieces and jewelry.”
Keith mentions that the workshop employs a jeweler, a watchmaker and a polisher so that they can provide everything from a simple battery replacement to a full restoration. “We work on restoration overhauls of collectible timepieces that are often worth $500,000,” he says. “And we guarantee the work.” Gray & Sons has an extensive service plan for both selling and repairing.
All certified pre-owned watches undergo a rigorous 86-step inspection and restoration process and the store offers a 12-month warranty on all watches and a 24-month warranty on all Rolex watches. For purchases of $2000 or more, customers become part of the “Like New for Life” program which includes free annual polishing, battery replacement, detailing, and pressure testing for the life of the watch.
The atmosphere of the store reflects its expertise and services. Keith says, “Our store has a family feel to it. We have a relaxed environment – we bring our dogs to the store, we kid around with our customers, we make jokes – but we take our work very seriously.”
He encourages people to stop by, “If you visit us, within a couple of minutes you’ll be asked if you’d like a cup of hot coffee, cold water or some other refreshments. We tell people to just come and say hello.”
For customers who aren’t local, Gray & Sons is the only store in the estate watch and jewelry industry in the United States that produces a monthly luxury catalog. The catalog, combined with its robust online offering, allows the store to be globally connected with customers.
“What I love the most about Surfside is that it’s a small town with international appeal. Customers here are from all over the world,” he says.
When Keith and his family are not busy at the store, he heads to the beach path. “I think one of the best kept secrets of Surfside is our beach. Walking along the beach path behind the hotels and condominiums, it is just so beautiful and breathtaking,” he says. “Many of us that have lived here for years tend to take it for granted!”
