Surfside Bans Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers to Combat Pollution and Protect Health

May 23, 2024

The Town of Surfside has officially prohibited the use of gas-powered leaf blowers within all Town limits. This initiative is part of the Town of Surfside's broader efforts to reduce pollution, protect residents' health, and preserve the local environment.

Gas-powered leaf blowers are known to emit significant levels of air pollutants, including fine particulate matter and greenhouse gases, which negatively impact air quality and contribute to climate change. The noise generated by these devices also poses health risks, particularly to those who operate them frequently.

Transitioning to battery-operated or electric leaf blowers by September 1, 2024, is strongly encouraged. These alternatives are not only environmentally friendly but also quieter. Electric leaf blowers can be up to 28% quieter than their 4-stroke gas-powered counterparts and 13-18% quieter than 2-stroke models.

There are so many benefits to transitioning away from gas-powered leaf blowers, including:

  • Less noise pollution
  • Reduced air pollution
  • No longer need to utilize gas and oil
  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions

The pollutants released by gas-powered leaf blowers can exacerbate respiratory issues and degrade the Town’s air quality. Furthermore, Surfside's proximity to water bodies makes it crucial to reduce air pollutants to protect water quality. Contaminants from air pollution can settle into waterways, impacting both the environment and public health.

Noise pollution from gas-powered leaf blowers has been linked to adverse health effects such as stress, hearing loss, and sleep disturbances. Reducing noise pollution will help create a more peaceful and healthier environment for Surfside residents.

The Town of Surfside appreciates the cooperation of its residents in making this transition. By adopting battery-operated or electric leaf blowers, residents will contribute to a cleaner, quieter, and healthier community.
