In this week’s episode of "Mondays with the Manager", Town Manager Mark Blumstein provides an update on an important environmental effort underway in Surfside: the dune restoration project at the 92nd Street beach access.
More than just scenic features, sand dunes serve as vital natural barriers. They help protect our community from storm surge, coastal flooding and erosion by absorbing wave energy and stabilizing the shoreline. However, natural wear and tear, including sea level rise and foot traffic, can degrade these formations over time.
To address this, the Town is restoring and elevating the dunes beginning at 92nd Street and extending south of 90th Street. The project is being completed at no cost to the Town, as it is a requirement placed on a nearby private development. Under current Town policy, all new developments must contribute to dune restoration, ensuring that growth supports long-term environmental resilience.
“This is a powerful example of how we’re aligning private development with public benefit,” said Town Manager Blumstein. “By requiring new projects to enhance our natural dune system, we’re not only protecting property, we’re protecting people, infrastructure and Surfside’s future.”
The project will continue northward once the necessary permits are secured, with future development helping extend the benefits throughout the shoreline. In addition to storm protection, the restored dunes will support native vegetation and local wildlife habitats.
