Disinfection Byproducts Monitoring Public Notice: Important Information About Your Drinking Water

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER

Town of Surfside Disinfection Byproducts Monitoring Public Notice

What happened?

Our water system did not meet the requirements of a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.

We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. On 10/27/2025 we received notice that the sample collected on 10/23/25 showed that our system exceeds the standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for TTHM. The standard for TTHM is 80 (MCL), while result of the October 23rd test was,181.898941 ug/L at 1000 89th St and 178.001486 ug/L at 9415 Harding Ave sample points. This exceedance was due to the Annual Chlorine Conversion by Miami Dade County Water Distribution department. The water distribution system has since been flushed by the Surfside Public Works Crew to correct the temporary issue.

What should I do?

You do not need to boil your water or take corrective action. However, if you have specific health concerns, please consult your doctor. Any customers who are concerned about their exposure to DBPs may choose alternative sources of water for ingestion.

What does this mean?

This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately.

Some people who drink water containing trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

What is being done?

The Town’s water department flushed the water distribution system to correct the temporary issue.

We will continue to monitor and report the TTHM/HAA5 results to you on a quarterly basis as long as the running annual average exceeds the MCL, as required by the FDEP; we anticipate improvement over the next two monitoring periods.
