The Town of Surfside will kick off Earth Month by unveiling two new fiberglass turtle sculptures on Thursday, April 2, at the beach entrance located at 92nd Street and Collins Avenue. The colorful installations are the latest addition to the Town’s growing public art collection and have been individually designed by art students from New World School of the Arts (NWSA) as part of a Town initiative.
Positioned one block south of the Community Center and the Turtle Walk exhibition at 93rd Street, the sculptures will serve as welcoming landmarks while celebrating the Town’s coastal character. The predominantly blue and green color schemes also highlight the Town’s commitment to sustainability through bans on plastic straws, single-use plastics and Styrofoam as well as awareness via curated special events.
The Resort Tax Board’s 2025 contest sponsorship asked students to propose their best design options. The Board’s top two designs, created by students Nicole Serrano and Noah Caballero, received custom prizes and were ultimately selected to be painted by local artist Cavan Koebel and installed at 92nd street beach entrance.
The unveiling will mark another effort by the Town to incorporate art into everyday public spaces, encouraging community engagement and highlighting Surfside’s distinctive beachside atmosphere and respect for the environment. Residents and visitors are invited to stop by, explore the new installations, and enjoy the refreshed entrance to the beach.
