Notice - Dune Restoration Project

Town of Surfside Dune Restoration Project

The Town of Surfside will begin construction on its Dune Restoration Project on Monday, May 11, 2026, as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the Town’s coastline, improve environmental resilience and protect the beachfront for future generations.

The project is designed to restore and enhance the beachfront dune system through strategic dune elevation, stabilization and native vegetation improvements. Dunes serve as a natural barrier that helps protect coastal communities from erosion, storm surge, flooding and the impacts of severe weather events, particularly during hurricane season.

Work is expected to reach substantial completion within approximately 90 days, with final completion anticipated within 120 days. The projected completion date is Sept. 8, 2026.

What the Project Includes

The project will focus on several key improvements along the beachfront between 87th Street and 96th Street, including:

  • Restoration and elevation of existing dunes to improve coastal protection
  • Installation of native dune vegetation to help stabilize sand and reduce erosion
  • Maintenance and enhancement of the existing pedestrian beach walking path
  • Improvements intended to support long-term shoreline resiliency and environmental sustainability

The work will begin at the beach access crossing and continue through the previously constructed dune section located between 90th Street and 92nd Street, in accordance with guidance from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Why Dune Restoration Matters

Dunes are one of the coastline’s most important natural defense systems. Healthy dunes help absorb wave energy during storms, reduce beach erosion and provide critical habitat for native wildlife, including protected sea turtles.

Over time, coastal weather conditions, storms, tidal activity and foot traffic can weaken dune systems. This restoration project is intended to reinforce those natural protections while preserving safe public access to the beach.

The addition of native plantings will also help anchor sand in place naturally, creating a more stable and resilient shoreline environment over the long term.

Sea Turtle Monitoring and Environmental Protection

Because construction will occur during sea turtle nesting season, Miami-Dade County will conduct turtle monitoring activities throughout the duration of the project to help protect nesting habitats and ensure environmental compliance.

The Town and its project partners are committed to minimizing environmental impacts while carrying out the restoration work safely and responsibly.

What Residents Can Expect

Residents and beachgoers may experience temporary impacts during construction, including:

  • Limited access to certain beach areas
  • Increased construction activity and noise during work hours
  • Temporary adjustments to pedestrian pathways

Every effort will be made to minimize disruptions and maintain safe access wherever possible throughout the project.

The Town appreciates residents’ patience and cooperation as these important improvements are completed.
