Miami-Dade County: Annual Change in Chlorine Disinfection

As part of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department's (WASD) ongoing efforts to provide a safe, potable water supply for the residents of Miami-Dade County, the department will temporarily change its chlorination method at each of its regional water treatment facilities from September 28, 2026, through October 11, 2026.

The department will use free chlorine as its treatment method rather than the usual combined chlorine at the treatment plants. This annual event, which has taken place since 1983, uses free chlorine as an alternative disinfectant because it is an effective method for cleaning water distribution systems. This change in chlorination does not cause adverse health effects; however, customers may notice a chlorine taste and/or smell in the tap water during the two-week period.
