The Town of Surfside (pop. Nearly 6,000) is located on a South Florida East Cost barrier island, with Miami Beach to the south and the Village of Bal Harbour to the north. Surfside is a small, attractive, beachfront community of approximately one square mile. The Town of Surfside Public Safety Department is a 45 member department comprising 31 sworn and 14 non-sworn positions (Communications Operators, Parking Enforcement, Community Service Aide and Administrative staff). The department is responsible for the enforcement of all local and state laws and investigation of crimes within the Town limits.
The Assistant Chief of Police is responsible for the overall operation of the different division of the department to ensure administrative policies and protective services duties are executed effectively. An Assistant Chief of Police is a senior officer who assists the Chief of Police in planning, organizing, and managing the activities and operations of the police department. An Assistant Chief of Police implements the policies and directives of the Chief of Police and acts in the absence of the Chief of Police.
The Town has a fiscal year 2024 budget of $39,096,814. The fiscal year 2024 Public Safety budget is $7,108,169 and $1,721.119 for the Parking Fund.
The ideal candidate must be motivated, experienced, and a proactive individual who has the ability to cast vision and priorities for the department aligned with the Town’s objectives, one who will look out in the future and assist the Town in preparing better for a better tomorrow.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field and advance courses in managerial and leadership training such as FBI National Academy, Northwestern Command Course, Southern Police Institute Command Course, leadership and administration. The ideal candidate must be certified through the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) and have a minimum of sever (7) years of experience as a Sergeant or above.
(A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

The Surfside Police Department provides law enforcement services to a diverse community with a population of approximately 5,800 residents.
The Police Department is a progressive, modern organization comprised of 31 sworn officers. Our officers provide the highest level of police service to the community we serve in a professional, courteous, ethical and judicious manner. Our civilian support staff provides an on-site communications center, property and evidence management and records management.

Starting Salary: $66,881.73. Excellent benefits.
Newly employed officers are eligible for a one-time cash bonus of up to $5,000 under the provisions of F.S. 445.008.
