The Surfside Police Department is increasingly concerned about the number of young people failing to follow traffic laws while operating scooters throughout the Town.
Police officers and community members report a rise in unsafe behavior, including riding against traffic, ignoring traffic signals, and operating scooters in pedestrian areas. These actions pose serious risks to riders, pedestrians, and motorists.
The Department is reviewing enforcement and education measures to improve safety and prevent serious injuries or fatalities. “Public safety is our top priority,” said Chief Press. “We are seeing behaviors that could lead to tragic outcomes if not addressed. Additional potential enforcement measures will be shared with the community as they become available.
